This morning I went into the garden, just to water the flowers and check to see if the cats had disturbed the litter, as usual. But as soon as I opened the gate, I immediately noticed a terrible smell. It made me feel suffocated and left a metallic taste in my mouth.
I took a few steps and stopped. Something was moving on the ground near the flowerbed.
Before me lay something slimy and reddish, as if it had been turned inside out. It smelled of rotting flesh, as if someone had hidden a dead animal nearby. I even flinched: my heart was pounding, and the most terrifying thoughts raced through my mind.
“What is this? A larva? A strange creature? The remains of an alien?” I couldn’t figure it out.
I grabbed my phone, took a picture, and while trying to fight off the smell, I went online to look for answers.
Those who see it for the first time often think they’ve found the remains of an alien. Some even call the police or emergency services.
But it’s just a mushroom. Alive, strange, and perhaps one of the most terrifying creatures on Earth, even though it’s a work of nature.
Now I avoid that place every day. I don’t water the flowers there anymore.
Let it grow; the “devil’s gift” must not be disturbed.
