I was in town with a friend. We spent hours drinking coffee and talking about all sorts of things. One time I spilled coffee on my clothes, so I went to the bathroom to clean them. While I was there, I noticed a toilet seat with a hole like this. It was the first time I had ever seen one like this in my life, and I didn't know why they designed it that way.

 

After asking around, even her husband didn’t know the answer, which made the mystery all the more intriguing. What seemed like a broken or strange pattern turned into a small, mundane puzzle.

It was later discovered that the open toilet seat was actually intentional. It is believed to improve hygiene, reducing face and back touching and thus cleaning, especially in public restrooms.

What started as an awkward question reminded us that even simple objects often have thoughtful reasons behind them. Sometimes they hide practical ideas that are part of our everyday use and that we haven't noticed before.
