We all know the feeling: that annoying moment. You put on your favorite jacket that fits perfectly and then… a small mistake. A scratch that threatens to turn into a real hole, or worse, a piece of clothing that you love but dare not wear because of the “popping seam”. What if, instead of leaving your jacket at the back of your closet or rushing to the tailor, you learned how to fix it in a few simple steps? You will find that even without a sewing expert, there are several very easy-to-use techniques that you can use to save your clothes in just a few minutes.
Why do these little holes form… and how can we fix them?
Before you grab a needle and iron, it is useful to know what causes these little injuries. A jacket, especially one that you wear every day, is naturally exposed to friction: handbags, armrests, seat belts, objects in your pockets… Not to mention thin hangers that pull on the threads. The result: a small scratch can quickly turn into a hole. The good news? The sooner you act, the easier and more discreet the repair will be.
Tip 1: Iron-on patches, a quick and reliable solution
If you had to choose the fastest method, this is undoubtedly the best. An iron-on patch is a small piece of fabric with an adhesive surface that can be attached in a few seconds using the heat of an iron.
It is particularly appreciated because it saves thin layers for precise sewing, but also thicker materials that need good support.
How do you do this?
Clean the area around the hole: a clean cloth will stick better.
Place the patch on the inside of the garment.
Iron according to the manufacturer's instructions and then iron firmly.
Let it cool before putting on the jacket.
The result is solid, fast and often invisible if you choose the right patch.
Tip 2: Hand sewing is perfect for small holes.
Do you like precision work? Then this method is for you. For holes that are only a few millimeters in size, a tight stitch is enough.
Steps:
Shade change.
Carefully sew the edges of the fabric together with a thin needle and suitable thread.
Make small, regular stitches and tie the thread discreetly.
This technique is very suitable for making jackets made of cotton, polyester or fine wool.
